Types of transplant
- Deceased-Donor Kidney Transplant - When renal failure happens for a patient, a kidney transplant is needed. A deceased person’s kidney can be transplanted in the patient. Before the transplant, thorough genetic tests are performed to check if the donor is a match for the patient.
- Living-Donor Kidney Transplant- A patient can also receive a kidney from a living person as humans can survive on one kidney. The best donors are twins, siblings, parents, or relatives.
Types of procedure
- Open Surgery - This is the traditional way of surgery where a large incision is made in the body to remove or repair the damaged organ. This is a highly invasive and painful surgery. The recovery time in this surgery is more and the chances of infections are also high. This costs around 4 to 8 lakhs for Indian patients and $11,000 to $14,000 for foreign patients.
- Laparoscopic Surgery - This is a minimally invasive surgery. In this surgery, the incisions that are made are smaller in size. Because of smaller incisions, the recovery time is less, and discomfort to the patient is also minimal. This surgery is done using special tools like a laparoscope and an attached camera. This costs around 7 to 14 lakhs for Indian patients and $13,000 to $18,000 for foreign patients.
